The premise of Ordinary Magic is just irresistible. A girl, living in a magical world, finds out she can’t use magic. Why? Because Abigail Hale is an ord. An ordinary. She may have been born into a magical family—where dirty dishes are never washed by hand (there’s a spell to poof them clean), and the family rides a magic carpet—but on her Judging day, Abby learns that she isn’t like the rest of them, or anyone else she knows. Her future is uncertain. What’s it like to face life this way? She’s about to find out.

Most Ords are sold into slavery on the black market, but Abby—one of the lucky few—has a supportive family who try to help her. After being kicked out of her school, Abby’s sister—who works for the king—helps her enroll in a special boarding school for ords. It's far from home, and everything she knows.

Abby soon discovers there are advantages to being an ord. She may not be able to use magic, but that doesn’t render her powerless. In fact, she’s quite the opposite, because magic won’t work on her. I loved this twist: how Abby uses what makes her different to her advantage.

As Abby and her ord friends are pursued by Adventurers, Goblins, and Red Caps, Abby’s family and teachers fear for the children’s lives. Will they be able to defend themselves, and triumph over magic, when they’re put to the test?

I loved how Ms. Rubino-Bradway handled the themes of this book for middle grade readers. When Abby’s world is turned upside down, the way she handles her new lot in life is the heart of this story, and Abby does it in a uniquely Abby Hale way. You’ll cheer for her, fear for her, and race to the very last page. Well done!

Loved it! Abigail Hale is the first MG+YA heroine that kids will really relate to. Living in a magical society, Abigail's fate is that she is an "Ord" - ordinary, unmagical and a possible danger to society. Placed in a special school to teach Ords the coping skills they will need to survive, Abigail is caught up in a series of adventures that teach her (and the reader) that even the "Ordinary" kid is special in some way. On the surface, this is a fresh and fun read in the fantasy genre, but there is something else going on below the surface - a message about bigotry, rejection and living with a "disability". Abby is a real charmer and the writing is smart and funny and well-paced with something of a cliffhanger at the end. Is there a sequel in store?

Kids having fun with this.
Great book. Abby was compelling and I really cared for her. The family dynamics were well written and I enjoyed the parts when the family were together. I especially enjoyed Gil. I would recommend this book.
This book is all sorts of amazing! The characters were engaging and fully fleshed out and the plot was unique and moved along at a good pace. Cannot wait for a sequel!
cozy up with your coffee or tea. Brilliant descriptions, lovely character development, and super cool plot points.
