So far, I've read three series of Beaton's Regencies. This, the Six Sisters series, is the best so far. Beginning with Minerva, Beaton takes us all the way to Frederica. The plots are somewhat formulaic in their foundation because all regency romances follow that map. However each Armitage sister arrives in London clumsy, farouche and terrified, is taken in hand by Lady Godolphin and each finds love, overcoming fear and obstacles. Beaton' writing is descriptive and she delivers Bon mots of humour along with political, cultural and social history as backdrop. It's as if Beaton establishes a stage production where the Armitage sisters lives are played out before our reading eyes in the foreground and Ton values, Regency social mores colors and informs the background along with cavortings of secondary characters. This series is so good that it could easily be made into one of those British costume dramas for PBS.

Minerva A Lythway book Marion Chesney 9780745101408 Books Reviews

I love Maion Chesneys characters, you can always identify with some part of their personality. The story's great with HUMOR and romance, instead of all the explicit SEXUAL CONTENT we are asked to swallow with some authors. She makes her CHARACTERS come alive, to the point that you feel like you are actually there with them, not many authors can do that. I`M a big REGENCY FAN, the first bok I read OF hers was "A House for the Season Series"' in 1983' This book is very good and holds your attention, you are anxious to go right to the next book in the series.
I not quite sure about this book. Minerva Her story fell flat for me. The Story line seems out of place. Minerva was counter productive, Sylvester was just so/so and Lady G (no words). I felt this would have been a good book for someone who may be quite young and starting to ready HR. NO romance or intimacy and rushed at the end; which by the way really sucked. I got it for 1.99 and I just realized that the others are much more expensive and so not worth it. I will not be purchasing the others unless its .99 or less.
This delightful series gets a fun and quirky start with Minerva. There's not a lot of complexity yet the story is charming, the characters are just flawed enough to keep their mistakes believable - they are "originals". The romantic details stay clean, hinted at, and pretty much behind closed doors. I love Beaton's writing. She tells a story that's not too long and good enough to hold my interest.
I am a total M C Beaton nut. I have all the "Agatha Raisin" and the "Hamish Macbeth" series and I have re-read them and will continue to do so just for the pleasure of good characterisation and interesting plots. I also got the series including "Belinda Goes to Bath" and enjoyed that too. Consequently I was dead keen to get hold of this series.

I read "Minerva," I quite enjoyed it, but am not in a hurry for any of the others. I found the participants very stuck in their defining characteristics - more caricature than character. I think that is why I got beyond caring about Minerva and didn't much like her younger sister. The one redeeming feature was her clergyman father - lazy, useless, scheming, but amusing in his own way.

It was good fun, informative and moved along at a good pace, but I prefer the author's later works.
I loved Minerva. But more than that, I love that Marion Chesney released her previously out of print Six Sisters Series to . What a treat! Every single character is fully developed. Yes, I took the bait and ordered one right after the other. Yes, all six. And believe me, when I finished the last one I was very sad that I would never again enjoy the exploits of Lady Goldolphin, The Vicar, and the entire catastrophic troupe of young ladies and their hysterical coming out parties in London. I'd never read much about the Regency period and generally hate romance novels. Oh, but these are so much more than that... So now, like a dutiful, serenely addicted nutcase, I'm off again with another Chesney series called Emily Goes to Exeter. What a great escape. I've also learned from other bloggers that I might enjoy Georgette Heyer--LOL, who would have ever thought!

Hardt 2
So the good vicar, the Reverend Armitage, who adores hunting, dogs and horses has lots of kids. Six girls and two twin boys and an hypochondriac wife to be exact. And because he's a stubborn old coot, he's poor. His bright idea is to marry off his oldest daughter, Minerva.

However, Minerva is a judgmental prude who happens to be a beauty. But she is also the glue that holds the family together. She manages the house, visits shut ins, writes Sunday sermons and is absolutely the most boring character I have had the misfortune to read.

I like the love interest, Sylvester, the secondary characters and the historical setting. The author does a great job with description.

I just wanted to strangle Minerva with her own petticoats. Maybe then we would not be subjected to such judgmental twaddle.
This book is the first in the 6 sisters series that chronicles the lives of 6 daughters of a country vicar. The first book is about the eldest daughter a priggish, highly moral young beauty who has absolutely no social graces. She is sent to London for a Season in order to snap up a wealthy man to recover the fortunes of her family which have been sorely reduced by the vicar' s obsession with hunting and several years of bad crops. Minerva is an interesting heroine. She has very strict morals but through a series of misadventures finds herself thrown together with one of the catches of the Season, an experienced rake who is never caught by the Parson' s mousetrap but who decides to champion Minerva's cause for some reason. I wish it had been longer and did not end so abruptly. I would have liked to have seen more character development but that may come in future books. Still, a very well-written novel. Highly recommended for all Regency Romance lovers.
