Island of the Mad A novel of suspense featuring Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes edition by Laurie R King Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks
This is yet another fabulous book by Laurie R. King. She keep Russel and Holmes fresh and exciting.
The setting, pre-WWII, is portrayed as the slowly creeping presence of fascism. The historical reality of who finds that option desirable is fascinating.
Add to that the central question of where the missing woman went and why. As that unfolds, we get another chilling aspect of societal norms of the time.
Thank goodness for the creativity and tenacity of Russell and Holmes (and Laurie R. King's amazing research and imagination)!

Island of the Mad A novel of suspense featuring Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes edition by Laurie R King Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
Another brilliant mystery with Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes. Watching their clever management of how people perceive them is so much fun. Where did a rich Englishwoman disappear to in Venice and why is developed all through the story to a stunning and very satisfying conclusion. If you have enjoyed the other books, you will love this one.
I'm hooked on Laurie R. KIng's fascinating writing. Her heroine, Mary Russell, partners perfectly with her husband, Sherlock Holmes to track down a missing woman, and reveals high society mystery in 1920s Venice. This, the latest in her beloved Mary Russell series, is among the best, and that is high praise. I'm very happy to reread her books for her eye for detail and singular voice of each character, even though I already know how everything turns out. Start with The Beekeeper's Apprentice and enter a marvelous world.
I liked this latest Holmes and Russell pastiche very much. It explores some too-timely aspects of the history of the 1920’s and sets Holmes and Russell in company with several historical persons to good effect. I enjoyed the descriptions of Venice and London of the mid-1920’s as well.
This series needs to return to its winning formula - Russell AND Holmes solving mysteries as partners and mates. Enough "Is she pining for those her own age" subplots, especially when there's no follow-up (none really wanted, thank you.) Russell may have been born an old soul, or made one through family tragedy, but she's 24. It's okay for her to demonstrate some degree of frivolity; Holmes is often less staid at his advanced age. Not everyone younger than she is "a child," her typical reference. Let her brilliant mind shine, let her and Holmes remain well matched and married. King' s earliest books grabbed readers, as did "The Murder of Mary Russell." Back to basics, please!
I've been a fan of the Mary Russell series for a long time, and have enjoyed the cleverness with which they are written. This one doesn't feel as polished as the others. Any plotholes are harder to overlook. The author's opinions about current gender and sexuality issues are laid on pretty thick. (I don't disagree with the opinions, it's just distracting.) It's still an enjoyable book, but it's not my favorite.
If you're a Russell and Holmes fan, read on! If you've never read a book in this series, don't start here, go read the previous books first.
As a long time fan of the Mary Russell mysteries, I anticipated the book for over a year, and it didn't disappoint. Russell and Holmes are thrown into a search for a woman who disappeared while on a pass from Bedlam where she had lived for years. Did she walk away of her own accord, was she murdered, was she abducted, all were possibilities. The trail leads Russell and her husband/partner Sherlock Holmes to Venice where they come up against the rising fascist movement and the devil may care bright young things infesting the famous Lido beach. With Cole Porter playing a tune that entrances Holmes and black shirts roaming the streets beating anyone who gets in their way, this story has an anything-goes race to the finish. One of the best in recent years!!
I absolutely adore all of Ms. King’s books, but her Sherlock Holmes/Mary Russell series is my favorite! “Island of the Mad” does not disappoint! I am not thrilled that Mrs. Hudson is taking a “side-trip”, but she would not have been in this book anyway, as it features Holmes and Russell in lovely Venice.
Russell has been asked by a friend to find her Aunt, while Holmes has been asked by his brother Mycroft to “check into things” in Venice re Benito Mussolini and the rising Fascist movement. Holmes is not quick to make that clear to Russell, however! We are looking at a post WW I, pre-WW II environment.
The missing Aunt, Lady Vivian Beaconsfield) by the way, has been in and out of insane asylums for many years. Her condition was said to have been brought on by the loss of her brother and father in the Great War – but is that really so? It is interesting to note that Lady Beaconsfield arranged to leave the asylum to attend her other brother’s birthday party, but she managed to disappear (after taking a large amount of money from her personal account, and having her brother get an expensive diamond necklace that is hers out of the vault). The nurse that was attending her has also conveniently disappeared!
Once in Venice the focus is on the Lido cabarets, wealthy, privileged individuals at play, and the ominous presence of the Fascist “Black Shirts”. Cole Porter, and a new (to Holmes) violin also come into play. There is also a strong LGBTQ theme, along with the rights of women – or rather, their lack of rights.
As always with Ms King, the characters are wonderfully bold, the storyline does not wander one iota, and the intensity of research shows through clearly. Thoroughly enjoyable, and highly recommended!
