I took advantage of a free offer of this book (revised) and haven't as yet reread this Kindle edition. However, this was the first book by Stella Riley I read back in 1990's and I have spent the intervening time hoping that she would increase her output. If I have it correct, this was the first published, though "Lucifer's Champion" was her first attempt (and copies of that book are rare and she refuses to revise or republish it) and was followed by 5 others, all of which have been revised and republished and submitted electronically. And as her many fans are happy to grab eagerly, new stories continuing her English Civil War saga and the Georgian Rockliffe series. Intrigue, romance and history; complex characters, strong heroes and heroines and their friends and sidelights on historical characters intertwined with the main protagonists. This revision has been issued on the 350th anniversary of the Plague and Great Fire of London. The plague is incidental, other than to set the beginning of the story in Oxford where the aristocracy had relocated to from London during the worst period of the epidemic. England is still slowly resettling after the Restoration of the Stuart kings and the return of exiles from the Continent. Soldiers, sailors, dispossessed Royalists and their dependents. And all the plots and counter-plots which still abounded. Enter Alex Deveril; embroiled in warfare from the age of 15, brilliant swordsman, musician, clever and widely-read. And about to be jilted. And not one to suffer fools or restrictions. But fascinating. Then half French Chloe, dependent on ne'er-do-well half-brother. Let the story begin. In Oxford, London, the Court, the Channel fleet and culminating in the fire that destroyed a great part of the old City of London. Exciting, sad, entrancing, with a thread of possible joy and laughter.
Much as I have enjoyed Stella's other books I return to this; standalone that it is.

The Marigold Chain Stella Riley 9780712602761 Books Reviews
Wow! I absolutely loved reading The Marigold Chain. A beautifully told story.
The only complaint I have is that the version has too many typos. Most we're easy to get around, but in a few places, I had to go back and re-read.
But don't let that stop you. A wonderful read.
Seven years ago I happened upon The Parfit Knight by Stella Riley in a used book store and so thoroughly enjoyed it, that I looked immediately to see if she had written more. She had, but at the time, only one other of her novels was available by loan from my library, the rest out of print, could only be purchased for extravagant sums online. Periodically, I would check on , but until this winter, had no luck. All of the titles in Ms. Riley's backlist are now available on , and The Marigold Chain was the first one I have had the pleasure to read. The language and historical detail of this book make the setting during the reign of Charles II of England lively and more than just a sketchy backdrop for her characters. Not just the hero, Alex, or heroine, Chloe, are fleshed out and made charming, their friends and enemies are similarly crafted with wit and attention. Like Georgette Heyer, whose Regency romances always delight, Ms. Riley's books do not disappoint a reader who wants more than a series of steamy love scenes to bring true love and romance to life.
The Marigold Chain by Stella Riley was recommended to me by a friend. The first book I have read by Riley but it certainly won't be my last. The story is set in the mid 1600's England and written splendidly by the author as to draw the reader in from page one. I was so engrossed in the tale that I read the book in one day.
The story line flowed seamlessly with well fleshed out characters. The main male character Alex Deveril is a man with flaws but nothing that can't be overcome with the love and understanding of the main female character, Chloe Herveaux. Their first meeting is not an auspicious occasion and there are many obstacles to a happy ending but they get there in the end. I especially liked how the author wrote about the court of King Charles II and how the king himself is portrayed.
A page turner of a book and one I highly recommend.
